Absolutely Epic Conrad Johnson Premier 8XS Amplifiers and PF-2 Preamplifier.

I acquired this Conrad Johnson system from a local collector in February of 2024. He was the 2nd owner and they were only used sparingly during his 20-some years of ownership. Conrad Johnson equipment is typically over-built and very reliable. These monster Premier 8XS amplifiers are no exception. But, as with any piece of somewhat “vintage” audio gear, they needed a little care before using them on a regular basis. I began my work with a deep cleaning and polishing, followed by many hours of testing. I discovered a few faulty components and made alterations to both amplifiers so they match electrically and physically. All cathode resistors were replaced after one of the originals failed, and all of the opamps (including 2 sockets) in the protection circuit were replaced. Each amplifier has a small batch of electrolytic capacitors which were also upgraded. Finally, the CJ power cord was replaced with an industrial IEC power connector with a ferrite core to eliminate stray RF and interference. I matched 8 pairs of Tesla EL34 tubes and set the amplifiers in my main listening space. I paired the 8XS amps with a super-reliable and quiet PF-2 preamp which I serviced recently. This system absolutely blows my mind every time I turn it on. I won’t try and explain the quality of the sound, but it's by far the best sounding system I’ve ever worked on, owned, or heard. Gobs of power and just the right hint of sparkle without being “bright”. The EL34 is legendary for sweet midrange and this system has midrange for days. I’ve enjoyed these Conrads for approximately 7 months now, and I probably listen to them roughly once per week. I have no stress or concerns about their condition, and I wish I had more time to enjoy them. But, as with all of my HiFi gear, it is time for a new owner so I can begin my next project. Logistics: I prefer to sell the preamp with the amplifiers because they are such a perfect match. I am in Northeast Ohio zip code 44410. I am willing to help cover mileage but, shipping is currently not an option. I do have the factory packing materials and 1 of the shipping crates. (the shipping crate is just a 24x24x16 box with a plywood base). I do not have the factory paperwork for the amps, but I do have the factory manual for the preamp.
